Our Mission
The mission of Basenji Rescue & Transport, Inc. is
to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home dogs of the basenji breed. BRAT is an
all-volunteer organization and has been recognized by the IRS as a
tax-exempt charitable corporation since its founding in 1999. BRAT rescues
basenjis from shelters, abusive situations, and relinquishing owners. We
provide routine and advanced veterinary care for our dogs and insure that
they have been spayed/neutered and appropriately immunized before
placement.
Our 800-plus volunteers foster basenjis in need,
evaluate dogs for temperament, obtain necessary training and
rehabilitation, and work to place each dog in the best possible home. We
also help transport dogs to foster and forever homes, notify responsible
breeders when their dogs come into rescue, provide post-adoption
counseling to adopters, educate shelters and other rescue organizations
about the basenji breed, and assist owners in dealing with basenji
behavioral issues in order to prevent dogs from needing to be rescued.
Although BRAT's primary mission is the rescue of purebred basenjis, we
also notify prospective adopters of basenji mixes who need re-homing.
BRAT operates throughout the United States and Canada;
the organization is funded primarily through tax-deductible donations and
adoption fees. We are always looking for new volunteers and welcome the
assistance of all current and former basenji owners and breeders.

The Basenji Rescue and Transport Inc. rescue Web pages
are directories of homeless purebred Basenjis and Basenji mixes. No
information on the BRAT pages is guaranteed. Although the information on
the BRAT pages are updated frequently, it is always best to call the
person or organization that lists the pet to insure it is still available
and to insure the information listed on the BRAT page is accurate. It is
crucial that any pet found through an adoption service or private party be
thoroughly examined by a veterinarian immediately upon adoption and before
exposing the animal to other pets in your household. Please be sure that
any basenji is strip tested for Fanconi on a monthly basis.
Any pets found, adopted through, or listed by BRAT are
the sole responsibility of the adoption organizations and/or the adopting
party. BRAT accepts no responsibility for any liability or for any injury
or damages to any person or property caused by any listed animal, as well
as any cause of action, claims, suits or demands whatsoever that may arise
as a result of such injury or damage
Neither BRAT nor its Internet Provider are responsible
for the accuracy of the information in these listings. We provide the
listings "as-is" to help dogs find new homes. We rely solely on
the information provided to us.
Since we do not guarantee any of the Basenjis,
prospective owners, or folks placing the ads, so please ask enough
questions to assure that you are getting a good match in a dog. We highly
recommend getting a written statement of transfer of ownership.
Note that either BRAT or any local club placing the
rescue Basenji may charge an adoption fee to cover direct and indirect
expenses incurred in their rescue program. Adoption fees are based on the
age and condition of the dog. These fees serve to reimburse the person or
group who have most recently cared for the dog (for spay/neuter, shots,
heartworm, fecal tests, basic health exam, etc.) |
