Our Mission
To rescue, rehabilitate and re-home dogs of the Basenji
breed; to educate and support owners, potential adopters, and admirers
of the breed; to rescue and foster Basenjis in safe and nurturing
environments; to provide the care that each dog needs; and to work hard
to educate ourselves so that we can confidently place adoptable dogs in
the best homes possible for a happy and harmonious outcome.
About Basenji Rescue and Transport
Basenji Rescue and Transport (BRAT) was incorporated
in 1999 and operates throughout the United States and Canada. With the
help of a vast network of dedicated volunteers, we place approximately
300 dogs annually in permanent, loving homes. We are recognized by the
IRS as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, charitable organization funded primarily
through tax-deductible donations and adoption fees.
BRAT receives Basenjis from relinquishing owners, as
well as from shelters or agencies that have removed dogs from abusive
situations or received them as strays. We make every effort to notify
the reputable breeder of the rescue before we take ownership and arrange
transport to pre-approved foster homes.
Before our dogs are approved for placement, they are
fostered, vetted, trained, temperament-tested, and rehabilitated, if
necessary. Vetting includes appropriate vaccinations, testing for
heartworm, strip-testing for Fanconi syndrome, spaying or neutering,
and, sometimes, other surgery. When the dog is ready for placement,
applications are reviewed to find the best home for the dog. Transport
to the new home is sometimes arranged.
We also offer post-adoption care to help the owner and
dog adjust to their new life together. This after-care is available for
the life of the dog to help correct behavior problems or other concerns
that may arise.
Although BRAT's primary mission is the rescue of
purebred Basenjis, we also notify prospective adopters of Basenji mixes
that need re-homing.
BRAT is always in need of enthusiastic volunteers, and
welcomes the assistance of all current and former Basenji owners and
breeders.
Legal Information and Disclaimers
The Basenji Rescue and Transport Inc. (BRAT) rescue Web pages
are directories of homeless purebred Basenjis and Basenji mixes. No
information on the BRAT pages is guaranteed. Although the information on
the BRAT pages are updated frequently, it is always best to call the
person or organization that lists the pet to insure it is still available
and to insure the information listed on the BRAT page is accurate. It is
crucial that any pet found through an adoption service or private party be
thoroughly examined by a veterinarian immediately upon adoption and before
exposing the animal to other pets in your household. Please be sure that
any basenji is strip tested monthly for Fanconi syndrome.
Any pets found, adopted through, or listed by BRAT are
the sole responsibility of the adoption organizations and/or the adopting
party. BRAT accepts no responsibility for any liability or for any injury
or damages to any person or property caused by any listed animal, as well
as any cause of action, claims, suits or demands whatsoever that may arise
as a result of such injury or damage.
Neither BRAT nor its Internet Provider are responsible
for the accuracy of the information in these listings. We provide the
listings "as-is" to help dogs find new homes. We rely solely on
the information provided to us.
Since we do not guarantee any of the Basenjis,
prospective owners, or folks placing the ads, so please ask enough
questions to assure that you are getting a good match in a dog. We highly
recommend getting a written statement of transfer of ownership.
Note that either BRAT or any local club placing the
rescue Basenji may charge an adoption fee to cover direct and indirect
expenses incurred in their rescue program. Adoption fees are based on the
age and condition of the dog. These fees serve to reimburse the person or
group who have most recently cared for the dog (for spay/neuter, shots,
heartworm, fecal tests, basic health exam, etc.)
