Amos

Amos Andy is a handsome, sleek, athletic, young Basenji mix with distinctive black and white markings. He's about 2 years old and weighs about 30 pounds. He is a mix, but he is all Basenji … only taller and without the yodel and curly tail.

Amos Andy got a rough start in life before he was embraced by friends at SmallDog Rescue who believe in him. He has lived up to their expectations. In foster care, Amos has blossomed into a loyal, loving dog. He would much rather be with his people than outside, but he also really enjoys a good game of chase with his four-legged playmates. Amos is still a little shy in unfamiliar situations, and it takes him a while to trust, but he is extremely smart and eager to learn. He knows several cues, comes when he's called, sits and waits politely for his meals, and learns new tricks with ease. He greets his people with a happy, wagging tail and sloppy, cheerful kisses. He has a streak of mischief that has begun to emerge, and his foster parents are happy to see it.

He gets along well with other dogs, although he is a little intimidated by much larger dogs. Amos would do well in a home with another compatible dog to pal around with. He has a fairly strong prey drive, so a home without cats is probably best. A securely fenced yard to run around in is a must.

Amos needs a patient, caring, all-adult home, or one with easygoing, dog-savvy older children, to show him how much fun being a much-loved pet can be!

PLEASE NOTE: WE ONLY ADOPT IN THE NORTH METRO ATLANTA AREA!!! Because we are an all-volunteer foster based organization, we are not able to conduct requisite pre- and post-adoption home visits outside of the north Metro Atlanta area. list_anything_else: Amos was very shy and scared when he came to live with us. He is now very confident in our home. He loves to play with our younger dogs and is respectful of the more senior dogs. He is very loyal and loving once he has learned to trust his people. He Sits and Downs on cue. He comes when he is called from the yard. He prefers being inside with his people rather than outside alone. He is a chewer and will gut plush toys and pillows. He sits politely as he waits for his meal. He is pretty quiet, but will bark when confined and others are in the house. He is wary of strangers, will bark at them, then accept them when he learns they are okay. He will dig if he is hunting something. He has hunted and killed birds and a chipmunk in our yard. He is food-motivated. He is also an opportunistic eater ... aka a counter-surfer. Edibles should always bed out of reach. He at times will chew and consume odd things ... grass, landscape bark, plastic lids, sticks. He is scared of thunderstorms. Amos is athletic and is lively in the morning. He likes to run, chase and retrieve toys. If you reach for him and he doesn't want to go, he will dodge you. He teases and basically dares you to try to catch him. He has a mischievous streak. Amos is a mix, but I have learned that behaviorally, he is all Basenji.
