Leo and Ruby
Leo and Ruby have lived together with their owners for as
long as they can remember. These two basenjis do very well together, and
would love to continue that relationship. Unlike many basenjis, they do fine
with cats, don’t go for human food, and they positively love attention.
The BRAT evaluator comments: When we arrived at their
home Leo and Ruby greeted us at the door. They both came right to us as we
walked in. They wanted our attention and to be petted. They also enjoyed the
treats we had for them. Ruby sat on the sofa next to me and Leo leaned
against my husband’s leg nudging him so he could be rubbed on the head. Leo
(pictured at left)
let my husband touch his right front paw but didn’t like his left paw to be
touched. Ruby didn’t seem to have any problem being touched anywhere. We
never heard a growl or saw any skittish behavior from either dog. They were
friendly and well behaved.
One thing we both noticed, and were impressed by; there
was an open bag of pretzels on the coffee table, neither dog took a second
look at it.
Leo and Ruby
(she is pictured at right) haven’t had any formal training, but do know
some basic commands (common basenji commands) like “off”, “sit”. And, like
most basenjis they pull a bit when walking.
Leo does need to be muzzled at the vet. And, he doesn’t
like having his front left paw touched. Both Leo and Ruby don’t like having
their toenails clipped. They don’t mind if you try to take away their toys
or food while they are eating, but they do get snarky when you take away
their rawhide chews. Both Leo and Ruby don’t mind moving when you want to
take their spot. They currently sleep outside in an Igloo or in bed with the
owners. Leo also loves to play in the cat's scratch posts (see his photo
below). They love to run on the beach, enjoying the sand and the time in the
sun. These are sweet dogs that love being around people and will make any
family wonderful pets.
