Pepper
Pepper,
a handsome tuxedoed 5-year-old, could be described as a couch potato until
its walk time. On leash Pepper does very well. He does occasionally pull a
bit and does like to sniff interesting locations at his leisure. He also
likes to check what’s behind him frequently by looking over his shoulder for
a moment.
Pepper is a bit aloof and likes to take his time getting
to know you. After several weeks in foster care he has come to trust his
foster dad and now freely asks for attention. He is becoming a very devoted
and underfoot boy. Pepper could be described also as an undercover agent
because this is where you will frequently find him when the nights get a bit
cool. He doesn't hesitate to root through the covers till he finds the spot
he wants, which is generally next to you, then plops down and sleeps quietly
till morning.
He has acclimated very well to a household with one female
and one male Basenji. They have free reign of the home and yard while dad is
at work, and Pepper has respected the furnishings without problem. Imagine a
basenji who has shown absolutely no signs of being destructive, either
indoors or outside…. He easily uses the doggie-door. Pepper seems to
tolerate (without complaint) the other dogs in the foster home and while he
hasn't initiated play with them, they are always seen together and no
discontent has been noted.
At the moment he is a bit overweight at 33 pounds,
although he is not particularly food motivated. He will decline a treat, but
enjoys his breakfast and dinner at a leisurely pace and begs only slightly.
When
talking to him, he frequently cocks his head to one side or another,
especially when the word 'walk' is said.
The home Pepper needs will have Basenji experience and
where the owner is willing to let Pepper be Pepper. This includes making
sure that people Pepper has not yet accepted as friends are told to let
Pepper approach them on his schedule, not theirs, and that he is handled
with due respect and care.
If you think you could provide Pepper with love, activity, and evening
cuddle-time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete
the BRAT
adoption form (if you have not previously done so)
and contact BRAT coordinator,
Oren Will.
The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name,
e-mail address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for
your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you
plan to transport Pepper. There is an
adoption fee of $250.00 for Pepper. This fee is used for all costs
associated with the care and feeding of Pepper and future basenjis in
rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered
($100.00-$250.00, depending on location), fully vaccinated and tested for
heartworm and Fanconi (negative unless otherwise noted), and temperament
evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling
to help deal with behavioral issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime
identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number. |
