Tut

Tut is a strikingly handsome capped-tri boy who loves affection and charms people immediately. He is six years old, healthy, and bonds very strongly to his person.

Tut has some standard basenji traits such as loving to de-stuff toys and shred tissue but he has not been at all house destructive. He is house-trained, walks well on leash (until he sees a squirrel), rides well in the car uncrated, and is extremely well-behaved with the vet.

Tut is a chow hound and needs to be monitored during feeding or when given treats. He will wolf his own food down and then look to steal other dogs' food as well. Tut does listen when you correct him, so you only need to keep watch and verbally correct him if needed and he'll let the other dogs eat in peace. You can take Tut's bowl away from him and take chews or toys from his mouth, so Tut isn't aggressive over food where a human is concerned, but he does not tolerate another dog trying to eat his food.

Tut craves your approval and affection and the worst thing in the world you could do to him is to keep him separated from you. Even when he is naughty and gets scolded, he immediately wants to snuggle next to you for reassurance and affection. Tut enjoys the dog park as he enjoys playing with other dogs and charms most everyone who meets him.

Tut is a good boy, but he needs a home that knows basenjis. He desperately wants and needs attention and affection and attaches to a person quickly, but it takes him some time to develop trust and to bond deeply. During that time, Tut will require a lot of patience and understanding until he learns that you will not hurt him. He needs a strong, alpha, but gentle family, who will give this boy a positive environment and who will not feel challenged when, and if, Tut tries to exert his dominance. The most effective way to deal with Tut is to ignore the rude behavior, talking to him in order to correct or reassure him. Tut can sound ferocious with the sounds he makes but it is all noise. His foster dad doesn't back down when Tut has challenged him and uses positive reinforcement and a strong voice when needed. This boy will not do well with any type of negative punishment because it will only reinforce his mistrust of people.

Tut currently lives with a full pack of basenjis and though he gets along okay in the pack with only an occasional disagreement, he will do better with just one other dog for company. His previous homes did not understand basenjis so Tut used that to his advantage and learned that taking charge over those humans (who gladly gave it to him) gave him what he wanted. When he was moved into his experienced foster home and tried that tactic with his new dad, Tut quickly learned that he doesn't need to be in charge anymore and he is a lot happier.

Tut will require a new home with someone experienced with the breed and willing to invest the time and patience to help Tut come to trust that he has found his forever home. Ideally, Tut would much prefer to be an only dog with someone who is always home or to have only one other basenji companion with whom he has to share your attention. Tut gives a whole new meaning to the idea of loving you "fiercely." Despite the challenges, as long as you are patient, treat him gently, and you understand that he must be handled positively, Tut will be your closest companion and you will surely love this endearing boy just as much in return.

If you think you could provide Tut with love, activity, and evening cuddle-time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact BRAT coordinator, William Key. The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, e-mail address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Tut.

There is an adoption fee of $225.00 for Tut. This fee is used for all costs associated with the care and feeding of Tut and future basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered ($100.00-$250.00, depending on location), fully vaccinated and tested for heartworm and Fanconi (negative unless otherwise noted), and temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.

His nervousness may stem from his being re-homed so many times. I don't know his complete background but his anxious behavior may indicate possible mistreatment.
