Ginger
Ginger
is one of the sweetest basenjis you’ll ever know. She loves to sit in your
lap and be petted. If you are not paying enough attention to her she will
paw at you until you start petting her, again. She has the energy of a
three-year-old basenji; you would never know she is seven years old.
She is very athletic and is also very food motivated.
Ginger came to me in 2002. Her owners at the time were unable to teach her
proper manners with the children. What we discovered was that Ginger would
try to take the food their kids had in their hands and would sometimes nip
in the process. They sent her to a trainer, to break her of this habit, and
the trainer’s remedy was to withhold food until the dog submits. Ginger did
not submit to this training method and basically starved. (She weighed 13
pounds when she arrived at my house; her normal weight is 18 pounds.)
Because of her poor training in the beginning, she will need additional help
so that she is not as possessive of toys or food.
After six months of care and feeding, Ginger was placed with a 75-year-old,
wheel-chair-bound woman. This was a match made in heaven for four years. But
in the fall of 2006, her owner became very ill and went into the hospital
for six months. Ginger came back to stay with me during this time and I had
to put her on a diet because she was up to an un-healthy 35 pounds—ironic,
isn't it? (She is now back down to 18 pounds.)
Ginger and her owner were reunited, but Ginger was a different dog. I don’t
know whether Ginger sensed that her owner was now weaker and was trying to
be dominant, or the stress of being separated for six months caused Ginger
to react differently to her owner, who could no longer care for Ginger or
give her the attention she so wanted. With her owner being more fragile
after her hospital stay, we (the owner and I) decided it would be best if we
found Ginger a new home.
Ginger has shown absolutely no signs of aggression. She loves going
in the back yard to chase birds and will do just about anything for food.
Ginger is more like a three-year-old than the seven-year-old; she is very
athletic and energetic. She just needs to channel that energy into something
positive, like some on-going obedience work and lots of long walks. Ginger’s
ideal home will be one where she can be the queen! She’s not one to share
the attention with another dog. She would need her privacy at night to sleep
in a crate. (All good queen need their beauty sleep, for heaven sakes!) A
home without small children that visit would be ideal, and someone willing
to work on obedience training with Ginger with nothing but positive
reinforcement would be fantastic.
If you think you could provide Ginger with love, activity, and evening
cuddle-time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete
the BRAT
adoption form (if you have not previously done so)
and contact BRAT coordinator,
Linda Webb-Hilliard. The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will
ask you your name, e-mail address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a
typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to
transport the dog. |

list anything else: Has basic obedience, will do just about anything for

strict behaviorist (she likes to grab food out of your hand.) In order
to control her he withheld food from her. Being a Basenji she refused to
do anything he wanted and he basically starved her. She came to me six
pounds underweight. We believe most of her food aggression issue came
from this incident. Ginger is a very sweet dog that loves to sit in your
