Bongo
Bongo
is a healthy, six-year-old tricolor Basenji boy. Even though he's six, the world
is a new place to Bongo because until recently he has lived his whole life
as a stud in a puppy mill. Now that he's been "sprung free," Bongo is like a
puppy all over again, feeling grass beneath his paws, running fast in the
backyard, playing with other dogs, and laying in the sunshine! All of the
things that a pet dog takes for granted are new to Bongo, and he clearly
loves his new life.
Bongo is a very expressive little guy, and he baroos and
barks probably more than most Basenjis. He seems to prefer being outside
rather than inside, and he's grown a thick coat of fur from being at the
puppy mill. So far he's not been destructive inside or outside -aside from
shredding a little paper, of course- and he hasn't tried to climb or escape
the yard. But, he's a typical Basenji and will run out the door to be
outside if you give him the chance, so take care to watch him around open
doors! Bongo doesn't particularly like to stay in his crate but can be
coaxed to eat in it; so far he hasn't needed to be crated when left alone.
Bongo is a social dog and likes to play with other dogs,
especially females. He shares his food well, and while he may challenge
another male for dominance, he puts up with just about anything from the
resident bossy female Basenji. Bongo loves to go for walks, loves to run
around the backyard, and loves to lay in the sunshine. He's not sure yet
about lying on warm human laps, so maybe you could teach him! He also likes
to ride in the car, and travels well. Along with getting used to the
advantages of being a pet dog, Bongo is also learning the ropes when it
comes to household etiquette. He is learning how to play with humans and can
sometimes be a bit mouthy (like a puppy) when he plays and takes treats,
which is understandable since this is the first time he's ever done these
things. His foster parents are teaching him how to play and take treats
gently, so he can be a good boy. He's newly potty-trained, so you must
remember to let him out regularly as he's still learning how to tell you
when he needs to go out. He's also starting to learn simple commands like
"leave it," which is useful when he's up to his Basenji mischief!
As
you can well imagine, Bongo is also getting used to human attention for the
first time. He is very fond of his foster Dad and follows him around the
house, even protecting him a little, but he's still afraid of his foster
Mom. Bongo is very cooperative and calm at the Vet, and he generally allows
himself to be handled all over without a problem. Care should be taken not
to grab him suddenly, though, because he's not used to this and will
defensively nip at things that move towards him suddenly. For this reason
Bongo will be placed in an adult-only home. However, Bongo is perfectly fine with being touched, handled, and picked up
as long as you're slow and gentle to allow him to feel comfortable with what
you're doing. You can also grab his collar underneath his chin as he runs by
and he doesn't seem to mind. It appears that he just needs some time to
build up comfort and trust with his new humans, and his defensiveness will
likely decrease.
Bongo is quite the handsome young boy, with a slightly
rakish look (due to missing the tip of one ear) that will surely warm your
heart. The vet described him as "showy" and he is every bit the lovable
little guy you see in his picture! He's a smart boy who needs a home that is
willing to continue introducing him to the world of being a pet Basenji, and
who will continue to teach him new things. He's been through a lot as a
kennel stud, and he deserves to finally live with a family of his own who
will love him and cherish him and let him run around outside in his fenced
backyard to his heart's content.
If you think you could provide Bongo with love, activity, and evening
cuddle-time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete
the BRAT
adoption form (if you have not previously done so)
and contact BRAT coordinator,
Chris & Tom Miles.
The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name,
email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for
your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you
plan to transport Bongo. There is an
adoption fee of $250.00 for Bongo. This fee is used for all costs
associated with the care and feeding of Bongo and future Basenjis in
rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered
($150-$400, depending on location), fully vaccinated and tested for
heartworm and strip-tested for Fanconi (negative unless otherwise noted), and temperament
evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling
to help deal with behavioral issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime
identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number. |
