Dutch
Dutch
is a very smart basenji. His foster mom is convinced there is a person
trapped inside his furry, four legged, little body. He can tell time; he
knows when it should be dinner time. He will do whatever it takes to get his
human to give him something to eat. His mission in life is to find a snack.
Anywhere. Inside or out. He will remind you with every bite (if you are
eating) that he is waiting and deserves a bite; with huge emphasis on the
cuteness factor on his part.
He is independent, not much of a cuddler but does like to
sleep under the covers. There are bouts of silly playfulness in the
afternoon. He loves to rip the stuffing out of his toys, then his foster mom
will stuff them up again for him. Movement, flowing garments, leaves blowing
in the breeze get his prey drive going and he will pounce. He made friends
with a cat who wandered into the yard; until it ran and he chased... (The
cat got away unharmed.)
Dutch is very reliable in the house. He is not destructive
at all so there is no need for crating. Like most basenjis, Dutch does have
an affinity for paper, especially tissues, napkins, paper towels. He walks
well on leash using an Easy-walk harness. He gets very excited when it comes
out and dances around in joyful anticipation. Dutch rides well in the car.
Fairly low key and not a rough-and-tumble basenji, Dutch does not need a
canine companion. He is confident around other dogs as long as they don't
bother him; letting them know politely to back off. Dutch knows "sit," "lay
down" and "shake."
He is a healthy boy with occasional bouts of disc
swelling. When this happens he is given muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatory
medication, and exercise/activity must be reduced. It's important to keep
Dutch at a proper weight to avoid these bouts.
The
perfect home for Dutch would provide him with a couple moderate walks each
day. A fenced yard would be nice to meander about in nice weather, but not
mandatory. He prefers a quiet atmosphere and would be perfect for a retiree
or someone who is home alot.
If you think you could provide Dutch with love, activity, and evening
cuddle-time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete
the BRAT
adoption form (if you have not previously done so)
and contact BRAT coordinator,
Roberta Kosek.
The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name,
email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for
your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you
plan to transport Dutch. There is an
adoption fee of $225.00 for Dutch. This fee is used for all costs
associated with the care and feeding of Dutch and future Basenjis in
rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered
($150-$400, depending on location), fully vaccinated and tested for
heartworm and strip-tested for Fanconi (negative unless otherwise noted), and temperament
evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling
to help deal with behavioral issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime
identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number. |
