Tahoe

Hi there! My name is Tahoe and my BRAT coordinator says I'm a cutie pie. I just turned 3 in November 2006, so I'm still pretty young. I can fetch—which I hear is really strange for a basenji—and what's even stranger: I like to bark when I'm excited or happy! I don't care that I'm not supposed to, I do it anyway. I also like to play tug-of-war. I get along well with other dogs—after proper introductions—and I like to ride in the car. I also walk very nicely on leash and know some obedience commands too!

I've had a good life—too good they tell me—and it went to my head and I thought I was king of the world. I have since learned better at my foster dad's house.

Tahoe is a great dog for the right owner. He has some specific unwanted behaviors that his new owner must understand and be willing to work through.

Because of this Tahoe will only be placed in a basenji-experienced home and his new owner(s) must be willing to come to Michigan to meet him in person, no exceptions.

Tahoe is house-destructive when left alone, but he can not be crated because he gets very claustrophobic and could hurt himself trying to escape the crate. Even when confined to a room, alone, he gets very anxious and destructive. Because of this Tahoe needs someone who is home most of the time. What works for Tahoe's foster dad when he's gone is to let Tahoe stay in a 4- by 8-foot exercise pen in the climate-controlled garage.

· Tahoe will not be placed in a home with children under 15

· Tahoe cannot be touched on his back end

· Tahoe cannot be picked up

· Tahoe cannot be woken up quickly

· Tahoe cannot be touched when sleeping

· Tahoe cannot be grabbed by the collar

Tahoe’s behavior issues can be overcome with the right owner. And because he's young, he is sure to continue to improve in the future; he has come so far in his foster dad's house already. He really is a happy-go-lucky little guy who just needs the right amount of love and positive reinforcement to help him grow into the best dog he can be. Tahoe is in excellent health, is up-to-date on shots, and neutered. He has strip-tested negative for Fanconi Syndrome.

If you think you could provide Tahoe with love, activity, and evening cuddle-time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact BRAT coordinator, Melody Townsend. The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, e-mail address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport the dog.
