Buster

Are you looking for a best friend? Do you and your family have a lot of love to share with a wonderful basenji boy? If so, Buster will be a wonderful addition to your family. Buster is a gorgeous red and white neutered male basenji with a ton of personality and a loving soul. He will melt your heart with his gentle brown eyes and strong desire to be with you.

When you take Buster outside for a walk, he will be complimented numerous times on his good looks. He walks well on a leash, but if he smells something particularly interesting, he will pull. Buster is an older fellow, so he does not really need long walks, but he does like to spend a lot of time outside in the yard. He is equally content cuddling with you on the couch, playing video games with your older kids or snuggling with you under the covers while you watch TV or a movie. His main goal in life is to be with you and be cuddled, belly scratched (in the superman position), ear scratched and loved.

A typical basenji, Buster can be cheeky at times. He is not food aggressive toward his own food, however, he he finds some food on a table or around the house and proceeds to eat it, he should just be left to eat it. He will snark and protect the food he has discovered... When extremely comfortable, he will occasionally grumble when he is asked to move. He can be cajoled to move with a little snack or treat though as he is very food-motivated.

In his previous home, Buster had the run of the house, and he was not house destructive. He loves rawhides and chew bones, so as long as he has one of those around, he will not chew items that he should not... It should be noted that he is a (dirty) laundry raider, and any personal items of clothing should be kept in a secure location, because if he finds them, he will parade around the house with them and then chew them to bits. (Ha! Ha!)

Buster occasionally does what is affectionately called "break-dancing" where he spins and chases his tail two or three times. He does this before going to bed, and it seems that this is his way of tiring himself out before he sleeps. This is not a regular occurrence, maybe once every few weeks.

Most importantly, Buster is a fanconi-positive fellow and he requires medications several times a day according to the fanconi protocol. He is expected to live a normal life aside from the medications he needs to regulate his system, but he does require extra care and love because of his condition.

Even though Buster has had a tough time of it lately, he remains optimistic and he is still looking for his forever home. He is ok with most other dogs and he is fine with older kids. It would be best if he has a home without children under the age of 5. He would be happiest if he were to be in a environment where his primary caregiver was home for most of the day, however, that being said, Buster is a very adaptable dog and what he most requires is love, patience and understanding. He will return the love to you ten-fold and he will never forget that you took care of him when his other families, though they loved him, did not work out.

UPDATE: Buster doing fine here. The pack and Buster get along ok. Buster sleeps thru the night, in bed with us all. He doesn't like me trying to get him out of bed in the mornings, so I just leave the lights on and go downstairs with the rest. Buster soon follows. I don't need the tweezers, anymore. Still put bicarb inside Velveeta cheese, on a paper plate. He eats it eagerly. Also am switching back to canned green beans, from home made mixed veggies.

If you think you could provide Buster with love, activity, and evening cuddle-time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact BRAT coordinator, Roberta Kosek. The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Buster.

There is an adoption fee of $225.00 for Buster. This fee is used for all costs associated with the care and feeding of Buster and future basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered ($150-$400, depending on location), fully vaccinated and tested for heartworm and strip-tested for Fanconi (negative unless otherwise noted), and temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.

Fanconi supplements for Buster
Venous blood gas done, 1/31/09. By using fanconi chart. this agrees with previous vet, for 7 bicarb twice a day. I have started him back on 3 (2x) and work up to 3 (2x) and 4 (2x), which the previous vet recommended. My goal is 3 at around 5 or 6 am when I get up, 4 before his breakfast 8 am, 4 before his supper 5 pm and 3 at 9 pm. Buster is already drinking a little less.
I use Velveeta cheese, and liverwurst, to hide the bicarb.
For 3 pills, on a paper plate, make a small flat patty of Velveeta and 2 of liverwurst. DO NOT touch the bicarb with your fingers, if he smells it he will not take it. I use a long tweezers, to place one pill on each patty, carefully fold over, into a small ball, to hide pill. If ball is too big he will chew and spit out. offer it to him on the plate. He is suspicious if you give it to him with your fingers. It helps to have him come and sit and be very upbeat with your attitude. I also give it to him before meal time so he is hungry.
