Haps is a sweet six-year-old Basenji boy. He is used to being an only dog, but has been socialized well and may get along with other dogs provided they are not too pushy. Haps loves walks and dog park visits and hanging out on the couch. He has a playful streak and likes to play with toys but would be just as happy sitting on the couch with a nice chewy bone too. He likes to be petted and loved on once he gets to know a person. Haps can be rather shy with strangers at first and does not like to be picked up. He will try to bite and folks need to know this. He's fine to put a lead on. He will often nip to let you know he’s not happy with something, but can be bribed with a treat. He knows “Sit” and “Go to your crate.” He also knows what the doggie door is for. He can often be found snuggled up on the couch or in a dog bed. He’s good with other dogs, but isn’t super playful and is just as happy by himself with a chewy or a toy. What he absolutely loves best is being with his humans.

He is crate trained but prefers to be out. After an adjustment period he would likely be ok in a secure area in the home for short periods when his humans are not there. He is not well suited to an ex-pen, but does respect baby gates. Haps has not lived with children, and because he prefers to meet folks on his terms, he would be best suited for a home with no small kids.

Haps’ perfect home would be with a quiet, Basenji experienced people where he could be king of his castle. He likes walks and snuggles on the couch and would prefer not to be around little people. He would benefit from a calming environment where he could be the center of attention. Occasional walks, some toys to play with, and lots of fresh air, sunshine and his favorite human would make him quite happy. He would be the perfect companion to a single Basenji experienced person and would do best in a quiet home without a lot of commotion.

If you think you could provide Haps with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Rebeca Best.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Haps.

There is an adoption fee of $250.00 for Haps. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Haps and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
