To rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs of the Basenji breed; to educate and support owners, potential adopters, and admirers of the breed; to rescue and foster Basenjis in safe and nurturing environments; to provide the care that each dog needs; and to work hard to educate ourselves so that we can confidently place adoptable dogs in the best homes possible for a happy and harmonious outcome.
Basenji Rescue and Transport (BRAT) was incorporated in 1999 and operates throughout the United States and Canada. With the help of a vast network of dedicated volunteers, we place approximately 250 dogs annually in permanent, loving homes. We are recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, charitable organization funded primarily through tax-deductible donations and adoption fees.
BRAT receives Basenjis from relinquishing owners, as well as from shelters or agencies that have removed dogs from abusive situations or received them as strays. We make every effort to notify the reputable breeder of the rescue before we take ownership and arrange transport to pre-approved foster homes.
Each rescue will be fully vetted. This includes spay and neuter, vaccines, flea preventative if appropriate, DNA testing purebreds under 10 for Fanconi syndrome, fecal testing and deworming if necessary, heartworm testing, and recommended dental work. All dogs over 10 get a senior panel. Also, when indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. When the dog is ready for placement, applications are reviewed to find the best home for the dog. Transport to the new home is sometimes arranged.
We also offer post-adoption care to help the owner and dog adjust to their new life together. This after-care is available for the life of the dog to help correct behavior problems or other concerns that may arise.
BRAT is always in need of enthusiastic volunteers, and welcomes the assistance of all current and former Basenji owners and breeders.
