Now available for adoption is Justin, a handsome, approximately six-year-old tricolor Basenji. Justin and 23 other Basenjis found themselves in a northern Minnesota shelter. The shelter enlisted the help of BRAT to take some of the Basenjis who were not doing well in a shelter environment. BRAT ended up with eight of the 24 dogs, and they became known as the MN8.

Justin is a very sweet boy who loves to snuggle. He loves attention, and his foster parents say he will snuggle with any willing human. He’s a very playful, mischievous, and energetic boy. He needs regular physical and mental exercise to stay happy. Justin is great on a leash and doesn’t have the drive to ‘escape’ the house as some members of the breed do.

Like many Basenjis, Justin is very curious and loves to explore. He has a strong desire to chew, so he should have various chew toys available at all times. If he’s not given appropriate toys and treats to chew, he’ll find his own. Plastic is a favorite of his, so care needs to be taken to not leave plastic items lying around. If left loose when home alone Justin does like to get into a bit of trouble, knocking things over and pulling things apart. Luckily he is crate trained, and views the crate as his safe space. Currently Justin eats his meals in his crate, and should continue to do so if living with another dog.

Justin can be touched all over, and is great with meeting strangers and respectful kids. He’s even done well with an energetic four-year-old visitor. He does get uncomfortable if feeling cornered, so he’d need to be supervised when around younger kids. Justin has never been exposed to cats, but would probably do best in a home without any. So far he has been pretty silent for his foster family, and has not yodeled or barrooed.

Justin’s ideal home would be one with a single female Basenji companion. He loves having a female buddy to play with, but going to a home as a solo dog may be an option. If a solo dog, he would need his human to make sure he had his daily fill of play, exercise, and companionship. He’s an active boy and needs lots of exercise to stay happy. He does have some same-sex aggression, so he will not be placed in a home with another male dog. Like many Basenjis, Justin would do best in a home with a structured routine, training, and exercise plan. He is a sweet boy, and would make a great companion.

If you think you could provide Justin with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Kelsey Brown.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Justin.

There is an adoption fee of $325.00 for Justin. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Justin and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
